ipl 15: du plessis registers 1st win as captain as hasaranga-inspired rcb outclass kkr in low-scoring thriller

With an aim to register their first win of the 15th season, Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squared off against bitter-rivals Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in match No.6 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy. After succeeding Virat Kohli as the leader of the Bangalore-based franchise, Du Plessis had an eventful outing for RCB in his captaincy debut although his batting heroics failed to rescue the three-time runners-up against Punjab Kings (PBKS).Marshalling the Kohli-starrer side in RCB's second outing of the season, South Africa's batting icon du Plessis won the toss and invited KKR to bat at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy. Spearheading the pace attack of the Bangalore-based franchise in the absence of Josh Hazelwood, pacer Akash Deep handed KKR an early blow by getting the better of Venkatesh Iyer. While Akash Deep removed Iyer, pacer Mohammed Siraj sent senior batter Ajinkya Rahane back to the hut in the 5th over. Youngster Akash Deep bagged his second wicket by removing Nitish Rana before RCB's star signing Wanindu Hasaranga took over and sparked a batting collapse of the two-time IPL champions. From KKR skipper Iyer to power-hitter Sunil Narine, spin wizard Hasaranga bagged four wickets as the Kolkata-based franchise suffered a shocking batting collapse. Hasaranga's four-wicket haul forced KKR to score 128 in 18.5 overs. Chasing the mediocre target, RCB parted ways with opener Anuj Rawat and skipper Du Plessis in the opening Powerplay.Pacer Umesh Yadav bagged the jackpot wicket of Kohli before Narine ended David Willey's resistance in the 11th over. Staging a comeback for RCB in the low-scoring contest, Sherfane Rutherford (28 off 40 balls) and Shahbaz Ahmed (27 off 20 balls) chipped in with crucial cameos to put RCB in the driving seat. Needing seven from six, Dinesh Karthik completed the run chase for the Kohli-starrer in the final over bowled by Andre Russell. Karthik smashed a six off the first ball of the final over before scoring the winning runs for Bangalore as RCB upstaged KKR by 3 wickets.
