The Karnataka High Court upheld the ban on Hijab in all educational institutions in the state and observed that it was "not an essential religious practice of Islamic faith". The verdict quoted an extract from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's 1945 book 'Pakistan or the Partition of India'. Referring to the extract, the High Court said that "the exclusion of hijab, bhagwa, or any other symbol of religion can be a step forward...to the access of education."
