Putin has been in executive control of the Russian Federation since 1999. He was first appointed as Prime Minister, but soon after he was elected President and stayed on for two consecutive six-year terms. Being constitutionally restricted to only be elected for two consecutive terms, Putin appointed himself Prime Minister until 2012 when he got elected as President again and is currently sitting in his second term.
