Consumption of donkey meat is illegal under the Food Safety Act, 2006. The arrested butchers were slaughtering donkeys sans adhering to any health precautions despite selling meat at prices as high as Rs 700 per kilogram. The animals were illegally smuggled to the spot from Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
