The Madras High Court has halted a Tamil Nadu government order permitting the serving of alcohol at convention halls during international events. The state had revoked special liquor licenses for marriage, banquet and non-commercial premises just a day earlier. The Tamil Nadu excise department has also begun to identify 500 TASMAC liquor shops to shut down and is focused on stores near schools and temples or which bring in little revenue. The organisation owns 5,329 retail outlets in the state, and its liquor sales rose 27% YoY to INR44098.56 crore ($5.9bn) in 2022-23.
