In a major blow to US President Donald Trump, the United States Supreme Court on Friday struck down President's reciprocal tariffs by a majority of 6-3. The decision centers on tariffs imposed under an emergency powers law, including the sweeping “reciprocal” tariffs he levied on nearly every other country.
Responding to SC's decision, Donald Trump said he will sign executive orders to restore tariffs using Section 122 for a global 10% levy and Section 301 to investigate unfair trade practices. He said he still has other tools to impose tariffs, though the process will take longer. Trump blasted the justices who ruled against him, calling them “unpatriotic,” while praising dissenter Brett M Kavanaugh as a “genius.”
It's the first major piece of Trump's broad agenda to come squarely before the nation's highest court, which he helped shape with the appointments of three conservative jurists in his first term. Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh dissented.
