The Union Petroleum Ministry confirmed that domestic LPG deliveries across India continue without disruption, including supplies to hospitals and educational institutions with Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma saying that domestic LPG production has risen by 30% since March 5, with refineries increasing output to strengthen supply.
Meanwhile, in a relief move, Iran permitted two Indian-flagged LPG carriers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, following talks between PM Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, easing the LPG supply situation.
Opposition MPs on Friday staged a protest in the Parliament premises over the reports of nationwide shortage of LPG gas cylinders amid growing concerns over LPG availability as disruptions linked to the ongoing West Asia conflict strain global energy supply chains and slow fuel shipments through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Amid the crisis, the central government extended the LPG booking gap for both rural and urban regions. "A 25-day minimum booking gap has been introduced as a demand management measure in urban areas and 45 days in rural and durgam kshetra areas," Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Puri said while addressing the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the additional LPG production is being directed mainly towards domestic users to prevent shortages at the household level. For non-domestic LPG, priority is being given to essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions.
The update was shared during an inter-ministerial briefing at the National Media Centre, where officials from several ministries, including the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Ports Shipping and Waterways, discussed the impact of developments in West Asia on energy supplies.
To manage the situation, the government has also issued new guidelines for natural gas distribution. Under these rules, sectors have been divided into four priority categories. Essential sectors such as household piped natural gas, CNG used in transport, LPG production units and pipeline operations will receive 100 per cent of their average gas consumption from the past six months.
Other industrial sectors, including manufacturing units and tea industries, will receive around 80 per cent of their average gas consumption, while gas distribution companies have been asked to ensure careful management of supplies.
Authorities said the measures are aimed at maintaining stable gas supply in the country as the West Asia conflict continues to affect global energy markets.
