Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the BJP, if voted to power in West Bengal, will resolve the Gorkha issue in the Darjeeling hills in a constitutional manner without dividing the state. TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee alleged that "logical discrepancy" under the SIR exercise is not an officially recognised term under the Election Commission framework and was selectively applied in West Bengal, unlike Bihar, to benefit the BJP.Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that there is an atmosphere of fear in West Bengal where incidents of murder, rape, rioting and political violence have reached their peak. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a two-pronged attack in West Bengal, accusing the BJP and the RSS of destroying the Constitution with their "hate-filled thinking", while claiming the ruling TMC has failed in fulfilling its promise of providing jobs to the state's youth.
Tamil Nadu will go to polls on April 23. West Bengal, the largest among the poll-bound states, will vote in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes for all five regions will take place on May 4 in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry. These elections, covering over 800 assembly seats and millions of voters, are seen as a major political test for both national and regional players.
